More Far North school children will have a much better chance of getting to and from sports fixtures as the result of increased funding through the Government's new Kiwisport initiative involving schools, clubs and local authorities.
In partnership with Sport Northland, the Far North District Council is administering the travel component of the fund in the Far North which, combined with the SPARC rural travel fund, has doubled from $25,000 to $50,000.
Applications for funding will be advertised in local newspapers from July 7 and the council's three community boards will consider them in September.
The Kiwisport programme aims to make it easier for more school children to get to their sports activities during school, after school and during holidays. It seeks to give them more opportunities to play sport by increasing the availability and accessibility of sports activities, and to help them develop skills that will enable them to play sport effectively at both primary and secondary level.
The wider Kiwisport fund is administered by Sport Northland which will allocate more than $230,000 to providers to meet the programme's goals in Northland.
