Kiwi triathletes Terenzo Bozzone and Sam Warriner won their respective events at the 'Eagleman 70.3' Half Ironman in Cambridge, Maryland USA overnight.
The two took very different paths to the podium however, Terenzo finally hitting the front with around 6 miles to go on the run after being down by almost 4 minutes at one point on the bike.
Warriner however left nothing to chance, the Whangarei Olympian led out of the swim by a handful of seconds from multiple world champion Michellie Jones (AUS) and extended that lead out to 2 minutes and 11 seconds after the bike. The only athletes able to stay in touching distance were Samantha McGlone (USA) and Natasha Badmann (6 x Hawaii Ironman World Champion).
Warriner wasn't done though, pushing it even harder on the run to clear out from the opposition, eventually finishing 3 minutes 11 seconds in front of McGlone in one of the more impressive performances of the summer.
Terenzo Bozzone by contrast had to win from behind, catching early run leader Andrew Yoder (USA) after the American had established a 4 minute lead off the bike. Bozzone (like Warriner) coped well with the extreme heat that stopped many athletes in their tracks, but not the two flying Kiwi's who made it a win/win for the black lycra in Maryland.
