Will The Wellington Phoenix take out Team of the Year category for 2010 or will they be pipped at the post by another very worthy team of Wellingtonians? Have you thought of nominating your club volunteer of the year for the Wellington awards?

Now it is your chance to have a say in who will win the 2010 awards by ensuring your favourite athlete, team, volunteer or administrator is nominated for The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

The Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards is organised by Sport Wellington and has become one of the prestigious events on the Wellington sporting calendar.

The Awards provide the forum for recognising excellence and achievements of athletes, coaches, officials, clubs, teams, volunteers and administrators, encompassing all sport ranging from the local sporting hero to the elite professional in the Wellington region.

Each year national and regional sporting organisations, clubs, media and the general public nominate those who have excelled in their role in their chosen sporting discipline. The qualifying period for nominations runs from Easter to Easter each year.

A panel of independent experts, comprising of prominent media and sporting personnel, reviews the nominations for finalist selection in each award category.

Nominations for The Dominion Post 2010 Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards are now open and will be accepted for the following categories;

  • Sportsman of the Year
  • Sportswoman of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Emerging Sportsperson of the Year
  • Personality of the Year
  • Club Team of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Disabled Athlete of the Year
  • Fair Play Award
  • Official of the Year
  • Administrator of the Year
  • Lifetime Contribution to Sport

The winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards dinner at the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday 3rd June.

All category winners (excluding the Lifetime contribution award) automatically become finalists for the supreme award – The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year 2010.

Accomplishments by nominees will only be considered if they have occurred during the qualifying period of 14th April 2009 – 5th April 2010.
