Just over 9,000 pairs of feet hit the street today for the Capital's largest fun run. The Pelorus Trust Wellington Round the Bays and New Balance Half Marathon was held in stunning Wellington conditions so participants were able to admire the spectacular views on the way round the bays and then relax at Kilbirnie Park and listen to the great entertainment line up.
"This is the 12th Round the Bays that Sport Wellington has organised and the second which included the half marathon event. The New Balance half marathon has added a new challenge and it was great to see that a huge number of first time half marathon runners and walkers were part of the field of almost 1500" said Event Director, Caroline Kidston.
"It was also fantastic to see people get behind the Great Workout Zone Sports Shoe recycling project. Hundreds, if not thousands of shoes were collected in the lead up to the event and on event day. These shoes will be either sent to Papua New Guinea to be re worn or reused and made into sports surfaces".
Heart Racers raised over $5,000 for the Heart Foundation with the top individual fundraiser, Melanie Bois winning herself flights for two to Sydney thanks to Air New Zealand and Round the Bays.
