This is a challenging but fun ride. Starting at the alpine village of Ohakune, the 160km course takes in the spectacular scenery of the Central Plateau and the Desert Road with Mt Ruapehu a constant companion as the riders circle the Tongariro National Park.
The event garners great support from the local community, and while it is growing year-on-year, there is a friendly personal feeling to the event, bringing many competitors, both elite riders and weekend warriors, back year after year.

Fun ride or race, the 2XU Ruapehu Cycle Classic has traditionally attracted some of New Zealand's top cyclists and 2010 will be no exception. Spectators and riders can expect a great spectacle as the main contenders employ their tactical and technical skills, sprinting, surging, attacking and chasing their way around the 160km course.
Top NZ rep, Toni Bradshaw, who smashed the women's record by a convincing 33 minutes in 2009, is confirmed in the women's field. Aaron Strong, who battled it out at the head of the bunch in the 2009 2XU Ruapehu Cycle Classic and who was on fine form for the 2009 Tour of Southland, will once again take the men's field.
Whether as a participant or a spectator cheering the riders on, why not make a weekend of it and find out what the 2XU Ruapehu Cycle Challenge is all about: 160kms of pure pleasure!
