Wellington City Council is calling on cyclists of all ages and abilities to pedal their way along the Capital's beautiful waterfront for the annual Bike the Bays on Sunday 13 December.

The popular free event is expected to attract more than 1500 cyclists and will feature three different rides - all departing from Waitangi Park.

At 9am accomplished cyclists can embark on the 26km return ride to Scorching Bay. Those looking for a more leisurely outing can opt for either the 10km return ride to Evans Bay Marina at 9.30am, or the 4km return ride to Queens Wharf which leaves at 10am.

There will be some traffic restrictions in place for the Scorching Bay and Evans Bay Marina rides, but cyclists should follow road rules at all times. However, the Queens Wharf circuit stays on the traffic-free waterfront shared path, so this ride is suitable for cyclists of all ages and is even open to trikes.

Following the ride you can wind down with a picnic in Waitangi Park featuring giveaways, food stalls and live music from local roots rockers Smokey Feel.

Cyclists are encouraged to register for Bike the Bays online on the Feeling Great website. But there's no need to panic if you don't - you can still turn up on the day with your bike 30 minutes before your start time. Don't forget to bring your water bottle, sunscreen and a helmet.
