Brownlee Reclaims Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Rankings Top Spot

Alistair Brownlee continued his ding-dong battle with Javier Gomez for the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship crown as the pair did battle once again in Kitzbühel at the latest round of the series.

Brownlee’s third successive win took his points total up to 2400, whilst Gomez sits just 32 points back on 2368. Impressively the Brit has accumulated his entire total from just three Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship series races whilst Gomez includes the same three races plus 203 points for his sixth place at the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup.

Laurent Vidal’s third place finish in Kitzbühel jumps the Frenchman up four places into third, ahead of Maik Petzold from Germany who moves up into fourth. Australia’s Brad Kahlefeldt drops two places to fifth. Tongyeong Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship winner, Bevan Docherty, sits down in seventeenth position having suffered a crash in the Austrian race. He will need strong performances at the final three series races in Hamburg, London and Yokohama to catch the two front runners.

Emma Moffatt further increased her lead in the women’s standings following her Kitzbühel win. With Olympic gold medallist Emma Snowsill missing the race, New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt took full advantage as she moved up into second, knocking the Australian down to third.

Moffatt’s 2640 points are made up of two Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship wins and a second place finish; as well as her Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup victory, which was worth half points. Hewitt sits some 411 points behind Moffatt but 411 points ahead of Snowsill.

Jessica Harrison from France retains her fourth place position but faces strong competition from Britain’s 2008 world champion, Helen Jenkins, whose fifth place in Kitzbühel moves her to within just 12 points. Kathy Tremblay from Canada was the other big mover following the weekend, climbing five places to sixth.

With three fixtures remaining before the Grand Final on Australia’s Gold Coast, the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship is still all to play for as the athletes travel to Hamburg, Germany for the weekend 25/26 July.
