Around 460 athletes tested their swimming, running and paddling skills on Takapuna Beach last night in Race 2 of the State Beach Series.
Conditions were very different from the previous week where competitors were lashed by strong winds and big seas. Steven Kent led the mens 1.5km swim home, making it two from two, 27s ahead of the promising Mirangi Bay teenager, Jackson Cropp. It was a real tussle in the womens event where last year's top performing swimmer Brenda Russell dead heated for first with Kirsty Wannan.
There was plenty of focus on the mens 5km Surf Ski Paddle where former olympic and world championship athletes are using the event as a teaser to olympic qualifying. Steven Ferguson reversed last week's result leading the field home, a comfortable minute ahead of Travis Mitchell and Ben Fouhy.
