Makino Aquatic Centre is to host the New Zealand Canoe Polo Association’s Schools Championships for the next three years as a result of its outstanding efforts at this year’s event in April.

NZCPA Schools Director, Peter Bolton, of Levin, said the Makino did "everything right" in ensuring the 2011 competition for 300 competitors from 21 schools ran smoothly.

"We work with a lot of pools around New Zealand and the Makino staff was excellent and there were no issues," he said. "They laid down some rules, we abided by them and it all worked out for us."

Mr Bolton said the Makino went out of its way to help the association and the feedback from the schools was definitely for a return to Feilding.

He said the price charged by the Makino was comparable with other venues, but that was not a major factor, as it all depended on the success of the tournament and that competitors, parents, teachers and coaches were happy.

"It all comes down to having the right facilities, along with location, accommodation and good security."

Mr Bolton said the Makino's grassed area allowed supporters to spread out and have meals to keep down costs, while a nearby hall had been ideal for meetings.

He said the association decided to secure the Makino for the next three years to give organisers more permanency and the opportunity to plan ahead. With this decision, the NZCPA expected an increase in entries for next year and the chance to promote the sport.

"The schools' council was unanimous in agreeing that this had been the best tournament in memory which was largely attributable to the venue and the staff."

MAC Programme Co-ordinator, Adie Johansen, was delighted at the NZCPA's decision to bring the championships back from Friday, March 30, to Sunday, April 1, next year.

"It's really great, especially for Makino and Feilding, as it doesn't get a lot of big competitions like this. And 400 new visitors has to be good for Feilding."

She said preparations for the 2012 event would begin in January when a more permanent structure for the goal system would be installed.

"They were really good visitors to have and were extremely tidy. We look forward to their return and the business they will bring to our community over the next three years," said Mrs Johansen.
