The day of the second annual Wainuiomata 6 Hour Wurldz race began with a blanket of fog clinging to the surrounding hills, but soon cleared a brilliant sunny day.
Nearly 200 competitors converged on the Waiu Reserve, keen to hit the trails that have been developed by the Wainuiomata Trail Project over the last 5 years.
The solo categories drew some well known names in the mountain biking community. Charlotte Ireland took out the woman's title, while local boy Jordan Blake narrowly took out the men's title over endurance legend Thomas Lindup. Singlespeed solo also had fierce competition, the mysterious Dick Fitzwell holding out Brendan Sharratt for the title.
The most competitive category however was that for best costume - the only category to offer a cash prize. Duo team Robin Hood and Little John and the saucy Ladies Who Lunch came close, but it was Paul Smith's B.A. Barracus that took the trophy, not only sporting home made bling and muscles, but rode a bike dressed up as the A-Team's van.
The event was well supported by local businesses - Lower Hutt bikeshop Bicycle putting up fantastic spot prizes, the Wainuiomata New World supplying the snacks and Hirepool, Metservice and Floe all providing awesome support.
The Wainuiomata Trail Project would also like to thank Hutt City Council, for not only sponsoring the first aid but for continuing to support them in building one of the best trail networks in New Zealand.
