Entries are now closed for the Sprint Triathlon race at the Blue Lake Multisport Event to be held in Rotorua on January 29 and 30, 2011.
A sudden influx in entries was sparked by news that seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, has entered the event for his first foray back into triathlon. As a result, the sprint triathlon event sold out in less than a week.
Event organiser, Charlotte Pearson from the Rotorua Association of Triathletes, says postal entries received today will still be processed, however, entry is now closed to online entries and any postal entries received after today.
Ms Pearson says entries to the other three events that make up the Blue Lake Multisport Event are still open. These are the Aquathon, 2km Swim and Fun Run.
"We are enormously excited that we have had such a great interest in our Blue Lake Multisport Event – especially because it is the 25th Anniversary of the event. It is wonderful recognition of all those who have competed in and organised the event in the past.
"This has always been one of the hidden gems of the annual triathlon calendar, loved by everyone who has ever been involved. It is run by volunteers with a love for the sport and who want to put on events for their local community.
"This philosophy certainly hasn't changed.
"Obviously we are absolutely delighted that Lance Armstrong will make his triathlon comeback in the Blue Lake at Rotorua. It is a great opportunity for Rotorua – and our chosen sport.
"But it will still be a grassroots event that has a heart and soul and we are completely committed to ensuring that at the end of the day, everyone some great races and a good time."
Entries are still open online for the Aquathon, 2km Swim and Fun Run. Go to http://www.rats.org.nz/795/eves-blue-lake-multisport-festival-2011-%E2%80%93-25th-anniversary/ for further information and entry details.
