Point 3 or .3 as it is officially known is Wanaka’s new multisport event set to take place on the varied terrain in and around Glendhu Bay this December 4. Why Point 3? Because each of the legs is point 3 of the distance of other well known races.
Point 3 includes 5 legs that will challenge the fit and allow for family or mates to enter as a team. Housing a sprint (.3 the distance of the Coast to Coast), road cycle (.3 the distance of the Round Lake Brunner), run (.3 the distance of an official marathon), mountain bike (.3 the distance of the Not So Big Easy) and kayak (.3 the distance of the Twin Rivers race) or swim leg (1.9 km so as to accurately equate to the effort and distance of the kayak) this race can include multisport athletes, triathletes as well as the hard case work colleague.
Organised by LMS Events, the same events company that ran the iconic Mountain 2 Mountain event and the Contact Epic Mountain Bike race around Lake Hawea, Point 3 is said to have the same camaraderie and light-hearted atmosphere as the M2M but with a few changes. The Mountain 2 Mountain had a core, loyal following, and while the entrant numbers were steadily increasing the race organizers see this new event attracting an even greater number of competitors from further a field.
"The Point 3 is designed for supporter involvement. All legs of this event start and finish, boomerang style, at Glendhu Bay on Lake Wanaka so crew and supporters need not leave the start line!" says Danielle Nicholson, race director. " Supporters can book a site at the camp ground, have a sleep in, cook their breakfast while the competitors register and then carry their deck chair to the sidelines."
Organisers see the event providing a greater number of visitors to the area from outside of town for a number of other reasons as well. The fact that there is a swim option for the kayak leg has meant fewer travel issues, the race also provides a fantastic, shorter distance training session for bigger challenges like the Contact Epic or Challenge Wanaka which follow later in the year.
