The South Island Swimming Championships held last month at Alpine Aqualand from 3 to 5 September resulted in one New Zealand record and 77 South Island swimming records being broken - a fantastic result for the competitors and host venue Alpine Aqualand.
Sophia Batchelor from Christchurch broke the NZ short course record in the female under 15 200m freestyle in a time of 1.59.56.
Alpine Aqualand aquatics manager Alex Calwell was thrilled with the times recorded over the three day meet saying that the pool has proven itself to be a high quality venue for competitive swim meets.
“The sheer volume of South Island records broken shows that Alpine Aqualand is a fantastic competition pool that provides the right conditions for competitors to really show what they are made of.
“It’s great to have a facility in Queenstown of a standard that not only enables us to host these events and give competitors an opportunity to achieve these kind of results, but also helps support the Queenstown Swim Club’s athletes reach their goals. Following the success of the South Island champs we’re hopeful that we will be able to attract more events of this calibre to the region,” Alex said.
The Queenstown Swim Club’s Early Bird Meet is scheduled for this Saturday 9 October. Spectators are welcome to come along to show their support and enjoy the great swimming throughout the day.
