Lake Wanaka’s tracks and trails are the starting point for the remarkable 7in7 Challenge fundraising event for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, led by Mal Law. Featuring seven marathons in seven days on some of the Southern Lakes region’s most spectacular tracks, the 7in7 Challenge has attracted an all-star field, starting on 28 November 2010.

A marathon from Lake Hawea to Glendhu Bay marks the start of the event following the Hawea River Track, the Clutha Outlet Track and then along the edge of Lake Wanaka to the picturesque Glendhu Bay. Chosen for its outstanding alpine scenery this first day is expected to attract the biggest field, including former rugby player and TV personality, Marc Ellis.

Day two is also in the Lake Wanaka region, a massive 55km circuit along the Young and Wilkin rivers with a 1,700m climb over Gillespie Pass. Starting at the popular Blue Pools on the Makarora River, the course follows the classic high alpine route through Mt Aspiring National Park, part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area. Runners on this day will be running alongside multisport world champion, Richard Ussher.

The final day in the Lake Wanaka area is day three with the challenging 49km Motatapu trail starting at Glendhu Bay and climbing over 3,400m through beautiful high country tussock lands and historic gold mining areas before descending into Arrowtown.

Lake Wanaka Tourism general manager, James Helmore, said it was testament to Lake Wanaka’s outstanding tracks and trails that the 7in7 Challenge organisers had chosen Wanaka to start their epic journey.

“There is an amazing network of trails here, from the easy lakeside tracks to challenging sub alpine routes, all surrounded by the spectacular mountains, lakes and rivers of Mt Aspiring National Park,” he said. “We’re delighted Lake Wanaka is playing a part in this hugely worthwhile cause and Lake Wanaka Tourism will also be taking part to raise funds for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation.”

On leaving the Lake Wanaka region, the 7in7 Challenge will feature runs in Queenstown and Fiordland. Organiser Mal Law will run all seven of the tracks, accompanied each day by runners from throughout New Zealand.
