Entries are now open for the inaugural Riverrun Trail Series, an off-road running series designed to showcase the spectacular lakeside and river tracks in Lake Wanaka.

The first event, 17 October, on the Hawea River Track offers a 5km, 10 km and half marathon option. With just over eight weeks to go there is plenty of time to kick-start the training programme to be ready on the start line.

Creating a series encourages people to stay fit and healthy throughout the year and to set personal goals. The John Pawson Trophy will be awarded to the fastest male and female competitors over the whole series. Competitors entering the series will need to enter the half marathon in Race 1 for the chance to win the trophy and major cash prize.

The event is well-supported by local and sporting businesses who are providing a great mix of prizes from accommodation at the Riverrun luxury lodge to Merrell outdoor gear, Revive beauty and massage treatments, sports clothing from Racers Edge and Sportsbands to track run training from Lakes Podiatry as well as many vouchers. Prizes will be presented to place getters and plenty of spot prizes to commend all competitors’ efforts.

Race director Victoria Murray-Orr is thrilled to see entries for the series already flowing in as serious and social runners make the commitment to be on the start line in October.

“The timing of the first race is perfect for people to focus their end of winter and spring training on. As the daylight hours lengthen and temperatures start rising it’s time to dust off the runners and start training, grab your friends and family and make it a fun social occasion,” she said.

The Riverrun Trail Series begins 17 October with a 5km, 10km and half marathon option on the Hawea River Track. Race two on the 19 February 2011 is a 14.1km run from Albert Town to Luggate on the Clutha River Track with the final race on the 21 May from Glendhu Bay to Wanaka’s Roy’s Bay via the Damper Bay and Waterfall Creek Track, 14.3km.

The Riverrun Trail Series is generously supported by Riverrun, the Pawson Adventure Fund, Nevada Sports, Racers Edge, Revive Beauty and Lakes Podiatry.
