Fitness options in the city will expand with Today's re-opening of Pioneer and Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centres (Monday 4 April).
"We know that many people want to get back to the pool or the gym as an important step towards normality in their lives," says Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sport Manager, John Filsell. "At present only the Lyttelton Recreation Centre and Cowles Stadium are open, but on Monday we will re-open Jellie Park and Pioneer.
"We really appreciate how patient our customers have been and know that people understand the need to put safety issues before anything else."
"We will offer extended opening hours at Jellie Park and Pioneer to cope with demand - which will include customers and members who usually use QEII and Centennial," says John Filsell. "There will be a hold on new memberships and casual fitness centre customers in the meantime, so we can focus on serving our existing customers. Casual group fitness and pool users are welcome at Jellie Park and Pioneer. We will have a range of options for current members to choose from and existing members will receive an automatic extension to their membership from 22 February to Sunday 10 April - which is the period of closure plus one week"
The extended opening hours for Jellie Park and Pioneer are 5am-10pm weekdays and 6am-9pm at weekends, starting from Monday.
All recreation and sport centre programmes (including Swimsmart and recreational programmes such as basketball, Pilates etc) are cancelled for the remainder of term one and customers will receive a credit for lessons or classes they have missed. Rebooking information for holiday programmes and term two activities will be available soon and will appear on the Council's website www.ccc.govt.nz.
The only exception to the cancelled recreation programmes is the Tumbletimes casual drop in class at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, which will continue to run from 9.15am-10.15am each weekday morning until the end of term one (Friday 15 April). Classes cost $3.10 per session (and $2 for each additional child from the same family).
QEII and Centennial Recreation and Sport Centres still need detailed structural assessments.
