Free outdoor group fitness classes will begin as soon as the grass dries in parks alongside the Council's Jellie Park and Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centres.
The classes will run on weekdays at Centennial Park (next to Pioneer Stadium) and on a grass area alongside Jellie Park. They are for anyone aged over 14 years; cater for all fitness levels and are free - with donations to the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal accepted at the classes. The classes are weather dependent and for safety reasons can not be run if the grass is wet.
Class times are:
Pioneer (Centennial Park - meet at stone toilet block)
- 9.30am Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
- 6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays
Jellie Park (follow chalk arrows from side car park)
- 9.30am Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
- 6pm Mondays and Wednesdays
The classes will run until further notice.
There are no toilet facilities at Jellie Park, so please come prepared. Please wear clothing appropriate for outdoor classes, and bring your own boiled water.
"With many fitness facilities around the city closed at present and some people still more comfortable being outdoors whenever possible, these outdoor classes are a great way to exercise the body in these stressful times," says John Filsell, the Council's Recreation and Sport Manager.
The Council's Lyttelton Recreation Centre is open. Jellie Park, Pioneer Recreation & Sport Centres and Cowles Stadium are likely to re-open soon.
People enrolled in Christchurch City Council recreation and swimming programmes such as Swimsmart, pre-school gymnastics or Pilates will receive credit for any lessons missed due to closures.
Fitness, pool and multi membership holders will soon receive information about options available to them. These are likely to include extensions to memberships, credit for closures or use of alternative locations.
