The Waitaki Aquatic Centre, due to re-open next week after extensive renovations, will now be closed until 25 May because some of the components have not yet arrived from Australia.
Aquatic Services Manager Mrs Kathy Moore said the scope of the upgrade was significant with up to 40 contractors on site at any one time.
"The contractors have worked very hard in cramped conditions and we are very happy with the progress they have made. The delay in delivery of some of the components was beyond the control of anyone working on the site or managing the project."
"We get about 2000 people coming to the pool each week and we know this is going to be very inconvenient for them," said Mrs Moore. "We apologise for that but we know everyone will be delighted with the end result."
Work on the aquatic centre has involved upgrades to the ventilation, heating and filtration systems, grouting the pools, rebuilding the front entrance, reinstating the public toilets, installing new lights and acoustic panelling, repainting, and installing a new U.V. disinfectant system for the pools.
"We regret the delay in opening and our staff have been working hard to contact the 800 swim school clients who were due to start classes again next week, as well as other regular users of the facility," said Mrs Moore.
