Mountain Safety Council Alpine/Avalanche Programme Manager, Andrew Hobman expressed his condolences at the loss of Paul McLauchlan in a climbing incident on Mount Ruapehu on Saturday morning.

“We are very saddened by the death of this young man. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Mr McLauchlan’s family and friends. We offer our support to those who knew Mr McLauchlan and to his fellow climbers at the NZ Alpine Club.

“In due course there will be a time to reflect on what occurred in this incident. The Mountain Safety Council is committed to ensure any review recommendations are incorporated into ongoing outdoor safety education and practice,” said Mr Hobman.
